In the Mega Man X series they have stuck to the basic Mega Man gameplay style but they added various improvements to the gameplay two examples being the ability to dash and to cling on-to walls, they also improved the animations used in the games. Here is gameplay from Mega Man X, it uses more sprites in-between to make it look smoother.
                                                     Megaman X gameplay

Capcom made various 3D Mega Man games one of them being Mega Man X Command Mission. The gameplay was changed completely and was made into a turned based RPG in this installment. There are 3D animated cut scenes which are quite interesting to watch but the animation isn’t the greatest because sometime the characters talk without their mouths moving. Also the 3D models are someone blocky and weren’t as appealing as the 2D ones.
                                             Mega Man X Command Mission

Some fans of the Mega Man series have been developing something they call Mega man 2.5D. Mega man 2.5D is a game that has the story and 2D graphics from Mega Man 2 but also features 3D rendered graphics and has Mega Man moving through a 3D environment but he himself is 2D.
